In this guide
Test proposed engraving or raised lettering through the intended printing and finishing route. A readable CAD viewport does not establish that the finished mark will remain legible. Record the exact text, geometry, location, material route and viewing method before approving a personalized production batch.
Start with the approved inscription. Confirm spelling, case, symbols and orientation separately from process feasibility. A technically excellent mark with the wrong date is still a failed order.
Turn text into a reviewable feature
Identify whether the mark is recessed, raised or applied through another process. Record its region, artwork source and the geometry actually exported. A font point size is not enough to describe the manufactured strokes and spacing.
| Check | Input to keep | Typical failure to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Exact content | Approved text record | Wrong spelling or symbol |
| Feature geometry | Actual exported mark | Narrow strokes merging |
| Placement | Source region and orientation | Mark reversed or obstructed |
| Finished legibility | Representative test and viewing method | Detail lost after finishing |
Formlabs’ design specifications distinguish fine raised and recessed model features within the specified equipment context.1 Check the actual printer and material guidance, then test the jewelry’s complete route rather than applying a generic font-size limit.
Make a representative coupon
Prepare a small test that reproduces the relevant curvature, mark geometry and finishing conditions. Include the proposed lettering and a bounded alternative where useful. Label each candidate in the digital record so the finished sample can be mapped back to its exact source.
A flat coupon may answer an early process question but not a curved inner-band placement. State what the test reproduces and what still needs review on the final product. Do not publish a coupon photograph as evidence that every custom ring passed.
Inspect each stage without losing the final task
Record the printed detail and finished detail separately. If strokes are visible after printing but not after polishing, the correction may belong to geometry allowance, placement or finishing rather than the original font alone. Ask the process owner to identify the relevant change.
Keep legibility and appearance distinct. A mark can be readable but visually heavier than the approved concept. Have the appropriate reviewer resolve that tradeoff before producing all personalized pieces.
Preserve the exact personalized configuration
Connect the inscription to the order, source revision and pattern identity. Use the batch traceability workflow so similar pieces do not get mixed. After a spelling change, retire the old personalized derivative from the production queue explicitly.
Download the engraving test sheet. Its test results and approval remain blank until a real sample has been reviewed. The wall and detail guide covers adjacent feature questions.
Rendora’s jewelry entry helps retain supplied models and manufacturing records. Verify that the delivered geometry contains the intended inscription; a text field or visual label alone is not engraved geometry.
Engraving questions
Can I choose a font only from a screen preview?
Use the screen to approve content and direction. Use representative process evidence to decide whether the exported features meet the finished task.
Should a process correction alter the client’s wording?
Keep wording fixed unless the client approves a content change. Propose geometry or placement corrections as separate decisions.
