Repeated sections must meet at predictable boundaries; a gate also needs an explicit opening and connection rule.
In this guide

Accept a modular environment kit by assembling a small representative layout, not by reviewing isolated beauty renders. Use the agreed grid, pivots, rotations and boundaries. Include a corner, repeated straight run, opening and mixed-size connection so the test exposes the places where modules must meet.

The key question is whether another level artist can build the intended layout without manually repairing each join. Geometry can be attractive and individually valid while still being unsuitable as a kit.

Define the connection contract

Record the base increment, nominal module dimensions, pivot convention and allowed rotations. Distinguish the structural boundary from decorative overhang. A roof trim can extend beyond a nominal wall boundary, but the mating edge must still be clear.

Epic’s world-building guidance for Maya users discusses consistent grid units and logical pivots for modular content.1 Choose dimensions for your project rather than treating its example increments as a universal standard.

Test piece Assembly task Failure to record
Two straight modules End-to-end connection Gap or overlap
Inside and outside corner Turn the boundary Thickness mismatch
Door opening Insert the approved door set Wrong clear opening
Short + long modules Close a loop Accumulating offset

Build a diagnostic layout

Start with neutral materials and visible edges. Place modules using snapping only; keep any manual offset as a recorded failure rather than a hidden correction. Close a rectangular loop, then replace one segment with smaller pieces that should span the same distance.

For example, two nominal two-meter sections should occupy the same straight run as one nominal four-meter section when that is the kit’s contract. That arithmetic is a proposed test, not evidence that a supplied kit passed it. Test corners and thickness as well: equal straight lengths do not guarantee a closed layout.

Separate geometric seams from shading seams

Inspect the join in an unlit or neutral view, then under representative lighting. A visible crack can come from misaligned boundaries, inconsistent normals, UV transitions or a lighting bake. Increasing texture resolution cannot repair a geometric gap.

After a source correction, repeat the same assembly layout. Use the normal-map diagnosis guide for shading discontinuities and lightmap checks when baked illumination is involved.

Check more than the visible surface

Walk the collision through corners, doorways and stairs. Inspect collision joins for snags and unintended blocking. Verify decorative variants retain the structural connection contract. A damaged-wall variant may deliberately change traversal, so its difference needs to be part of the level-design brief.

Keep a module inventory with source revision, dimensions, pivot and compatible neighbors. The kit review sheet records assembly cases and actual observations. Do not mark the whole kit accepted because one straight run works.

Package the kit for another artist

Include the diagnostic layout or reproducible placement instructions, importer settings, named materials, collision sources and unresolved exceptions. Keep engine-specific assets separate from the interchange master where necessary. The outsourced asset review explains how to structure the final receiving decision.

Use the Rendora game entry to inspect the available delivery workflow and preserve source evidence. Grid assembly and traversal remain receiving-engine checks.

Kit questions

Can I hide a small gap with trim?

Use trim when it is an intentional part of the kit. Do not make an undocumented corrective offset the required assembly method.

Does every module need the same pivot location?

It needs a predictable convention for its connection task. Document exceptions and test them alongside the standard modules.
