Who Owns Your 3D Product Assets? A Practical Handoff Checklist

Specify reusable source deliverables in a production agreement. A file-and-permission schedule with supplier questions.

A finished image and the editable production package are different deliverables. Name both before production starts.
In this guide

Specify the files, access and permitted reuse you need before commissioning product visualization. Receiving final images does not automatically give your team an editable master, texture sources or permission to reuse third-party scene assets in another production.

Treat this as an operational handoff schedule to discuss with the supplier. Record the agreement that governs each asset rather than assuming one ownership label answers every question. The goal is practical: can an authorized receiving team open the package, identify its dependencies and produce the next approved update?

Name deliverables individually

A native project, a portable GLB and final JPEGs serve different tasks. A native project may retain editing history and renderer-specific materials. A GLB can provide an interoperable visual derivative, but it is not a substitute for every native feature. Final images may be all you need for a single campaign, while a growing assortment usually needs a clearer update path.

Deliverable Ask the supplier Receiving test
Editable master Which application and version? Open in the agreed environment
Textures Are source files and adjustments included? Resolve every required reference
Scene and lighting Which dependencies can transfer? Rebuild an agreed view
Portable model Which features survive export? Inspect in the receiving viewer
Final media Which placements and revisions are covered? Match the approved manifest

The Khronos glTF overview describes glTF as a format for efficient transmission and loading of 3D scenes and models.1 That purpose explains why an interchange file and a complete authoring archive should be separate line items.

Trace third-party dependencies

List purchased materials, props, fonts, photographs and plugins. Record the source, license evidence, account holder and whether a receiving supplier needs its own access. Keep the record with the project revision, not only in an email thread belonging to one employee.

If a scene dependency cannot be transferred, ask for a replacement plan or a clearly defined supplier-operated update service. Do not discover this after the original artist has left. Likewise, identify whether a product logo or reference image was provided by the brand and whether the supplier used any additional material.

Test a small update before closing the handoff

Choose a bounded change: one approved fabric option while retaining the original geometry and camera. Have the receiving team reproduce a defined output. Record missing dependencies, renderer differences and the time needed to locate the correct source. This is an acceptance exercise you can run; it is not a claimed Rendora customer result.

Ask how revisions will be named, what remains archived and which party maintains backups. Set the boundary between an included correction, a new finish and a geometric redesign. The update guide explains how those changes affect downstream files.

Use a handoff schedule, not a folder promise

Download the asset handoff schedule. Fill in the required source, receiving application, permission evidence and tested output for each item. Keep unknown fields open until the supplier answers them.

The Rendora option library preserves an uploaded master and builds configured derivatives. Uploading a file does not acquire rights to its third-party contents. For technical file preparation, use the model package guide.

Common questions

Is a GLB enough to change a product later?

It may be enough for supported material or existing-node choices. Parametric geometry changes, renderer-specific effects and manufacturing work may need other sources.

Should source files always be included?

Match the purchase to your update needs. If they are excluded, make the service dependency and future update scope explicit before approving the quote.
