In this guide

Review every enclosed or partly enclosed cavity as a process feature. Identify how material can enter or leave, how the interior can be inspected and which later operation depends on that access. Reducing modeled volume is not enough to establish that a hollow jewelry design can follow the proposed print-and-cast route.

Use a sectioned source model and an agreed manufacturing sequence. A finished exterior photograph cannot reveal hidden pockets, disconnected internal shells or an opening obstructed by the chosen print orientation.

Give each cavity an identity

Mark the cavity, its surrounding walls and its connection to the exterior. Record whether an opening is functional, temporary or part of the finished appearance. Include its location in the source revision so it can be reviewed consistently after changes.

Feature Review question Responsible input
Internal pocket Is it connected to an accessible opening? Sectioned geometry
Opening Does orientation preserve its intended access? Preparation review
Surrounding wall Does the chosen process support it? Process-specific criteria
Finished underside Can it be inspected and finished? Bench review

Formlabs’ model-design specifications discuss drain-hole considerations for enclosed cavities in the specified printer generation.1 Use the guidance for your actual machine and material; do not transfer a numeric limit from another process into the jewelry file.

Review the whole route

Ask the print operator how the chosen orientation and preparation address the cavity. Ask the casting partner whether the internal geometry and access are compatible with its route. Keep those responses tied to the model rather than treating a hollowing command as manufacturing validation.

Follow the equipment and material manufacturer’s operating instructions for cleaning and post-processing. Record the completed process and actual inspection result; do not improvise a chemical or handling procedure from a visualization article.

Distinguish volume savings from finished weight

Removing a cavity volume reduces the modeled solid volume, but it can also change wall geometry, access openings and later finishing work. Compare valid geometry before estimating mass. Keep density, alloy and process assumptions explicit using the CAD-volume weight guide.

For an illustrative volume comparison, removing 150 mm³ from a 600 mm³ solid leaves 450 mm³, a 25% modeled-volume reduction. This is geometry arithmetic, not a measured finished-weight saving or proof that the cavity is manufacturable.

Inspect a representative pilot

Choose the cavity with the most difficult access and preserve the actual source and preparation job. Record print findings, processing completion and the receiving workshop’s observations. If access fails, distinguish opening location, orientation, wall geometry and process mismatch before choosing a correction.

Use the cavity review sheet to keep each question visible. Blank fields remain unknown until an operator or reviewer supplies evidence. The support-placement review and casting workflow address adjacent stages.

Keep the public model separate from process instructions

A customer-facing view may show the desired exterior while the workshop needs sections and opening details. Deliver the appropriate sources to each audience. Rendora’s jewelry entry connects supplied models and review evidence; explicit cavity and process checks should remain attached to the manufacturing package.

Can a watertight mesh still have a problematic cavity?

Yes. Mesh closure establishes a geometric property, not internal accessibility or compatibility with a particular print-and-cast route.
